Profile Views And "Real" Counters

At present, a portion of the Blogger users are complaining that their "profile" numbers are not increasing or that they barely are. Blogger said that they changed it all due to problems such as hackers giving themselves all kinds of extra clicks. Anytway, the system was getting overloaded in some fashion. Evidently, it may now register numbers by larger increments, not one at a time. Whether or when Blogger may make a better "improvement" than that is unknown so far. Get a real counter like Site Meter or Statcounter. The "hits" on your Profile are like how many people saw your business card, but a real counter would track how many people visited your actual "store" (blog)! It's the store visits that count, isn't it? Counting Profile Views is of a much lower order of importance. It's a shame that Blogger left it vague enough that some people never thought about the relative lack of meaning in the Profile numbers. It's too late to correct that damage, but I advise that people shrug it off and get one of the real counters Many are free.

Placing direct information and a photo into the sidebar to replace the Blogger "About Me" Profile OR because you want more or different info/pictures in your profile! You may desire to put hyperlinks or other items there which you cannot place in the official Profile. For different reasons, some people even want to be able to have a different Profile on different blogs on the same account. This is a workaround to achieve that goal. By placing the code for an image and your own personal info directly into the sidebar or page element, AND by suppressing the Blogger Profile, you can work around the problem. You'd have to eliminate the Blogger Profile entirely (mark it as NOT to be shared, either in Edit Profile or in the Profile page element). [Remember, these profile substitutes will only appear on your blog while the original official Profile will still be what's available to persons where you leave comments on other blogs!]

First thing is to find a photo. My Blogger Profile pic is 88x68 pixels, but of course that's only how it shows in the sidebar. The photo size I submitted was 320x240 pixels. I don't currently know how much larger you can go, but I've seen some that were very large in other Profiles. Obviously, what we'll need in the sidebar is one of those pics such as Blogger pics turn out that are shown larger when clicked on.

For the test photo I use further down the page, I started with a medium photo in a photo program where I could copy it and resize the copy. Thus I had a thumbnail and a larger pic, as so many of us are used to.

My thumbnail here is larger (123x92)than the profile photo I actually use, but it fits in the sidebar, and that was my only goal. So I took the two photos and fitted them into the formula as below.

Once the images are hosted online, you can copy the code and place it in the sidebar, probably looking something like this:

Below is the actual code for the fabricated Profile I made up in a practice blog (shown further down the page). The code should be entered in an html/javascript page element in New Blogger or in the sidebar section of the template if you are still using a Classic template.

Hide Blogs on the Profile List?

How Can I Show Some, Hide Others?
Go to Dashboard Click on Edit Profile About 4 items down, it says "show my blogs" and that's where You then click where it says "Select blogs to display" A list appears and you should click on the ones you wish to display. Be sure to "Save settings" in the bottom right corner of the screen.

People Can't See My Profile?

Maybe it's not activated.
Go back to your Dashboard. On the far left, click on Edit Profile (to the right of your photo). Make sure you've clicked "Share my profile". At bottom of page, click "Save Profile".

Edit Profile, to state the obvious, is where you go to paste the url for your Profile Photo.

1. If you need to alter the photo size, use a photo program to do so while it's still on your computer. 2. Use a blog post (on your main blog or some other) and use the photo icon (in the toolbar above the Edit Post text box) to add a photo. 3. You'll Browse your own computer, select one, and upload it to that post. 4. When you've completed that, you'll have a lot of code for a large and small photo pair, part of which ("http://... etc.) is the URL. 5. Save that post, but it's not necessary to publish it. 6. Use the right-click menu on the mouse to Copy the URL. 7. You can later Paste it into the "Photo URL" box in your blog's Edit Profile list. 8. Be sure to save the change at the bottom of the Edit Profile page.

If you use Blogger's picture icon or otherwise end up with the code for both large and small images, go here to unscramble the text and select the code for the smaller one at Header Picture Code.

Show No "About Me"

Show no "About Me",
Show only the "View My Complete Profile".

1. Go to the Layout section. 2. Click on Add Page Element. 3. Add it, if absent, or click on Edit Profile. 4. Click on Share my profile. 5. Do not click on About Me. 6. You may want to unclick the Show Location. If unsure, worry about it later.

This should allow most of the About Me to remain unseen, while your readers still have the View My Complete Profile to click on.

Header Picture Code

Unscrambling Blogger photo code for Header picture code

Blogger's picture icon is good for regular pictures in the post or in the sidebar, but it's overdone for the purpose of putting a photo in your header. You don't need both large and small versions for the header.

What Blogger may give you when you upload the photo to a post (Save it, but don't Publish it!) will resemble this:

If you didn't notice on your own, the difference between the red code at the top and the red code above this paragraph is that the -h has been deleted after S1600.

Assuming that the S400 is actually small and not just less than the large one, you could enter that code, as shown, into the Photo Url as your Profile Photo.

Google Blog Search

It used to be that you could click on someone else's "favorite" things in their profile or even in your own profile and you could link to those people in Blogger whose specific interest reflected some of your own. A lot of people have complained about that feature being done away with in New Blogger. You could look up everyone who was interested in masturbation, approbation, Christian Cooking, diabetes, or whatever ticked your clock or worried you. I noticed recently Google has a new Blog Search that is similar, but dissimilar, to the above. It's better than nothing! The search is not limited to any one brand of blogs, but claims it will eventually list all brands of blogs in it's search parameters. Check it out: Google Blog Search

Later: The "favorites" feature in your profile has now been restored to Blogger, so you now have two means of searching!

Those unhappy about losing any other Blogger feature should contact Blogger at Wishlist. State your desire. Even if they don't answer you (and they won't), you will have had your say. Blogger has now removed it's Wishlist.

Change Your "About Me" Title

Trips Into Space?!

I'm not certain if you can change it in Classic Blogger, but in New Blogger you can easily change your About Me to read something else. Mine reads "Lies About Me". Yours could say "My Trips Into Space", or whatever you like.

You cannot however change the "See My Complete Profile" because that is one of the things that belongs to Blogger and isn't accessible to you or me, not that I have been able to discover. Sad, but true.

In New (beta) Blogger:

1. Unless you have been an idiot and deleted the "crossed tools" editing icon (wrench and screwdriver), go to the crossed tools under your "About Me" section.
2. Click on the editing icon.
3. A popup window will open with various information fields that you've probably already filled in when you created your blog.
4. The title "About Me" appears at the top and you can delete and/or replace it.
5. Click on Save Changes before you're through.

The change will usually be instantly visible when the popup window closes. If not, try Refresh (F5). You can go back to this editng box as many times as you need to.
